Loughborough College’s Flames: Lighting the Way programme joined this week with Inspire LeicesterShire, the British Heart Foundation and the Wells Sports Foundation to kick off the countdown to the London Olympic Games next year.
Tuesday saw the landmark figure of 500 days until the Games start in 2012 and Leicestershire were keen to celebrate in style.
Five hundred children from five local schools took part in a specially designed torch relay starting off at Loughborough College before ending up at Leicester City’s Walkers Stadium.
Chris McGeorge, Elite Sport Officer at Loughborough College, said: “It has focussed our minds as to how soon the Games will be here.
“Our main objective is to secure a legacy for the youth of the UK. Flames: Lighting the Way, seeks to ensure both a volunteering legacy and a healthier, more physically active next generation.”
Young leaders from Loughborough College delivered physical activity sessions at each school along the way before children were able to take part in the torch relay with the 1948 Olympic torch held by the College.
The final leg of the relay culminated in a lap of the pitch at the Walkers Stadium, cheered on by Foxes boss Sven Goran-Eriksson.
